Bovell is, after a long career inside the UK reggae and pop scene, that started around 1970, still active as musician and producer.

In the late 1970s he worked with Rico on records released as Matumbi's alias The 4th Street Orchestra and went on to engage him for Linton Kwesi Johnson's mayor works, Forces Of Victory and Bass Culture (in 1979 and 1980 respectively). Later Rico played on some of his solo work. During the 1990s producer Fizzé from Swizerland had both artists within the Peeni Waali project.
